This is a complex song. There are lots of ways to look at it.
It happened, all of the sudden, BAM. Fully written. Music, lyrics. Complete in about 5 seconds.
I was driving to work one summer day, on the same road I'd always driven to work. This day, however, the perfectly semi-mansion landscape was punctuated with a homeless man pushing an overflowing shopping cart down the sidewalk.
I had to pull the car over. The reality check hit me so hard.
This song pushed its way right out of my soul. I'm not normally so dramatic. It caught me by full-on surprise.
In what reality does abject poverty contrast with a manicured neighborhood?
This one.
Is the poison the homeless? The neighborhood? The reality of contrast? Who sells the snake-oil these days? The politicians always have but the polished veneer has slipped. Big business holds all the fundraisers and yet pays hardly any taxes. The credit for philanthropy goes to Walmart for their donation of all your generous dollars, given as you've checked out.
Is the pretty girl responsible for her rape because she could be taken by force? Has society compounded and pounded women, races, religions, LGBTQ so they feel degraded enough to self-hate yet?
Are all women evil because Eve listened to a snake?
Who is suppressing equality, physical autonomy, reproductive rights?
Who doles out death in the name of religion?
When the aggressor plays victim, how does the the real victim find justice?

See! This song gave me SO many QUESTIONS!
This is NOT an easy song to pin down because SO many consequences come from undervaluing and dis-empowering the individual.

You see, as a kid I was quiet but always found it impossible to stand quietly by when another was ganged up on. It nearly got me killed every time the focus turned my way.
Still, I persisted.

Lyrics

I have a heavy load and there's a long, dark, road ahead.
I am a rambler and a rounder
I've been around a time or two.
I can prey upon your weakness because my face seems fair and true.
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I'll scare you.
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I"ll scare you.
I am the apple of tempation
A siren's song you can't ignore
I have sold my soul to the devil and I am his, forever more but
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I'll scare you.
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I"ll scare you.
So come to me
you little children
who did not heed my solemn word
I am the one to know my secrets
and you will tremble
if you've heard
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I'll scare you.
Don't look beneath the skin because my poison is within.
Don't look beneath the skin because I"ll scare you.
I have a heavy load and there's a long, dark, road ahead.
