From the recording Double Down
This spooky feeling acoustic original was inspired after I read the screenplay "Beasts Of The Southern Wild."
The thought, prompted by the tiny heroine Hushpuppy, haunted me. Her perspective turned my world around on its head. She was a child, faced with living poverty. It was her reality. She and all her people lived in a place called "The Bathtub." New Orleans, coastal, One ill-placed hurricane away from drowning everything she ever knew or loved.
How would you look to whatever scares you?
What would it see when it caught you?
Would it see you as a screaming pile of fear?
Or could you be like Hushpuppy?
Because Hushpuppy, the main character of the story, a child alone in the world, decided to go find the thing that scared her the most; I decided her courage deserved to inspire us all, in song.
What she found, in a real world of confusion, devastated by neglect, a land decimated by raging storms, levee's of segregation and separation, volunteers trying to help, strangers who turned into angels, and she found herself. That truth is, when it becomes the Eye of your own storm, that TRUTH is the consequence of real courage.
